From February 21 through March 2, you have the chance to bid on more than 60 items on eBay, the world's online marketplace. Sponsored by American PHOTO magazine and eBay, proceeds from this charity auction will benefit UNICEF's efforts with the Asian Tsunami Disaster.

Auction items can be viewed at http://www.ebay.com/americanphoto and the program will be featured in American PHOTO's March/ April issue, on newsstands March 1. Bidding will begin on February 21 at 3pm at the eBay booth #1732 at the Photo Marketing Association International (PMA) Trade Show in Orlando, Florida.

Maar: Steve McCurry schoot de beroemde foto in 1984, en de Nikon N90 kwam pas op de markt in 1992... Het is dus niet de camera die hij in 1984 gebruikte, al wordt dat gesuggereerd. Een officiële aankondiging van Ebay heeft weer een andere (tegenstrijdige) tekst: Steve McCurry is donating the Nikon N90 and lens that Steve McCurry used to shoot during September 11, 2002 after he returned from Afghanistan to locate and shoot the Afghan girl, Sharbat Gula, first pictured on the cover of National Geographic Magazine, and later in publications around the world.

De feiten: De foto uit 1984 werd gemaakt met een Nikon FM2 en een Nikkor 2,5/105mm objectief. De foto uit 2002 werd gemaakt met een Nikon F100 en een 1,8/85mm objectief. Steve McCurry heeft voor andere reportages wel regelmatig een N90 gebruikt, maar nooit om "the Afghan girl" te fotograferen. De te veilen camera is een N90s uit 1994, die hij gebruikte bij het fotograferen van de aanslag op het World Trade Center op 11 september 2001 (en niet 2002, dat zouden ze in de V.S. toch moeten weten). De lens die bij de camera wordt verkocht is een 2.8D/28mm, die gezien zijn smetteloze staat destijds niet is gebruikt (en detoneert met de gehavende camera). McCurry werkt vaak met een 1.4/28mm, nimmer met de 2.8. Maar als u in sprookjes gelooft moet u vooral bieden op deze camera.
